Grains & Legumes — representative imagery

In brief

The range runs from milling and feed wheat, yellow maize, barley and sorghum to long-grain white and parboiled rice, soybeans and soybean meal, and pulses — chickpeas, red and green lentils, yellow and green peas and faba beans. Each contract names crop year and origin and sets out the full quality schedule: protein, moisture, test weight, foreign matter, broken and damaged kernels, admixture and, for milling wheat, falling number and wet gluten. Tolerances, and how the price moves with protein and moisture, are fixed in writing before loading.

Origins are chosen on crop quality and on freight to the destination — for Asian buyers that typically means Australian, North American and Black Sea wheat, South American soybean meal and rice from mainland Southeast and South Asia. We contract on GAFTA and FOSFA standard forms, for instance GAFTA 49 for FOB and GAFTA 100 for CIF, with arbitration under GAFTA No. 125. On request an independent surveyor (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or the buyer's nominee) samples, analyses and certifies weight at the load port. Mycotoxin, pesticide-residue and GMO testing is done before loading where the destination sets limits, and a sealed sample is kept for the life of the contract.

Cargo moves as bulk vessel parcels, in containers with food-grade liners, or in 25 kg and 50 kg bags on pallets. Holds and containers are checked for cleanliness, dryness, odour, infestation and residue of earlier cargo before anything goes in. Phytosanitary certificates and fumigation follow the importing country's plant-protection rules — those of Barantin for Indonesia — and in-transit fumigation is used only where carrier and destination both allow it.

Shipping & paperwork

How the cargo is packed, priced and documented

Packaging & stowage

  • Export bagging is usually 25 kg or 50 kg PP woven bags at 20–26 t per container; printed BOPP laminated bags carry retail rice and pulses to artwork approved by the buyer.
  • Bulk-in-container loads use a food-grade liner and bulkhead, plus a discharge sleeve where the receiver tips containers.
  • Timber pallets are heat treated and stamped to ISPM 15; where timber is restricted, slip sheets or one-way plastic pallets replace them.
  • Holds and containers are inspected for cleanliness, dryness, odour and pests before loading, and desiccant is added on long tropical voyages to limit condensation damage.
  • Bag marks give product, grade, crop year, net weight, lot, origin and, where required, the importer's registration details, halal mark and country-of-origin statement.

Incoterms we use

  • FOB — bulk parcels and containers on the buyer's nominated vessel or booking, with laytime and demurrage as set in contract and charter.
  • CFR — the normal basis for containerised rice, pulses and bagged grain into Indonesian, ASEAN and South Asian ports.
  • CIF — CFR plus marine insurance; ICC (C) is the Incoterms 2020 minimum for CIF, and food cargo is often insured more widely.
  • FAS — bulk parcels lifted from alongside or by barge at the loading port.
  • DAP — delivery to a flour mill, feed mill or warehouse, with import clearance and duties for the buyer.

Documents supplied

  • Commercial invoice and packing list with crop year, grade and HS code on each line
  • Bill of lading, or charter party bill of lading with the charter for bulk parcels
  • Certificate of origin, legalised where the destination requires it
  • IPPC-format phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country's national plant protection organisation
  • Fumigation certificate giving fumigant, dose, exposure time and temperature; in-transit fumigation only where allowed
  • Independent certificate of quality, analysis and weight at load port, with a draft survey report for bulk
  • Health or free-sale certificate, halal certificate and non-GMO declaration where the destination calls for them
  • Insurance certificate on CIF sales, and a hold or container cleanliness certificate

For producers

Supplying this division

Exporters, mills and processors holding export-ready tonnage are invited to send specification, crop year, load port and monthly capacity. We work from independent analysis and a sealed sample, not from indicative figures.

Give us the grade and the port. We will return origins, terms and a firm price.

Quantity, destination, delivery window and the specification you buy against are enough to begin. Where a product falls outside our book, we tell you plainly instead of offering a substitute.
